Wellness Care & Your Pet
For most pets, we recommend that they come in to see us at least once a year. We may recommend that your pet should see us more frequently depending on factors such as age, breed, and general health. For example, puppies and kittens will need to see us more frequently to get all their vaccines in a timely fashion. We will help you understand what the best cadence for their care is.
When you bring in your pet for their annual wellness exam, your pet will undergo:
- A full body physical exam
- Laboratory testing of blood and/or feces
- Parasite prevention measures
- Vaccinations
A physical exam helps your veterinarian understand your pet’s general condition. We conduct a nose to tail exam, leaving no paw unturned, to search for things such as lumps, bumps, or scratches. We examine your pet’s fur, eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. A physical exam can tell us a lot about your pet’s health without any invasive measures.
We often conduct laboratory diagnostic testing with your pet’s physical exam. This can include testing of samples of blood, urine, or feces, depending on what we are looking to examine. These tests help us understand the function of your pet’s internal organs, something that we would not necessarily glean from our physical exam.
Parasite prevention is an important tool in keeping your pet healthy for the long term. Depending on your pet’s health and lifestyle, we may recommend different forms of parasite prevention to keep your pet happy and healthy for the long term.
We recommend that you vaccinate your pet against a broad range of communicable diseases, which can be dangerous or even deadly to even the healthiest of pets. We will recommend different vaccines depending on your pet’s age, breed, and overall health.
We hope that you will also use your pet’s wellness exam to ask any questions you may have about your pet’s health and wellbeing. You know your pet best! If you have noticed any changes to their behavior, eating habits, weight, or any other characteristics, we want to know about them. Any information you can give us is invaluable in treating your pet’s needs.
